Joe Louis arrives at DaNang airport

Airports are like heroes: they come in all shapes and sizes. Some airports like Heathrow in England, replete with high end retail stores, resemble large shopping malls more than transit hubs. Airports like Changi Airport in Singapore seem like resorts with their massive food courts, comfortable waiting areas, and shower-inclusive bathrooms. Other airports, serving small towns rather than major cities, are one runway, one room affairs.

While the shiny glitz of large airports is exciting, the serene quaintness of smaller airports provides a more easy going experience. Air travel has become so stressful with long lines, confusing security procedures, and maze-like structures that comedians continue to mine it as an unending source of material. Sometimes it’s nice to have a simpler experience. Da Nang’s airport has one terminal with just a few airlines and a single, short security line. No need to take a shuttle from one end to the other and walk/ride across miles of moving sidewalk. Charging stations and in-house bars are nice, but simplicity has its own special appeal.

See what other blogs are saying about different types of airports:

Chances are you’ll have more fun in Singapore airport than you’ll have in actual Singapore. I promise, it’s so cool that I’m actually looking forward to the next time I have to transit here. The place is like a gigantic big kid’s playground, with more big screen TV’s, video games and computers than Dick Smith Electronics.”

“It is a great honour to be named World’s Best Airport by Skytrax for the third year running. This recognition is particularly pleasing for us as it comes at a time of transformation at Changi Airport.”-The World’s Best Airports Awards
