Joe Louis sits at a table for one

Descriptions of Baphuon often refer to its recent renovation. The restoration is only recent in so far as its completion, but work was being done decades ago until the civil war that engulfed the country interfered. Now the temple and the upper levels are open to visitors, but there is still some debris out front. I like the ruinous look in the courtyard as it adds a picturesque character to the temple.

See what other blogs are saying about the debris at Baphuon Temple:

“Restoration could be slow going: Pre-Khmer Rouge, the French took apart the temple, intending to restore the rocks and piece them back together. But when the Khmer Rouge came to power they lost or destroyed the detailed plans. Oops. Many of the rocks still lay outside the temple walls, waiting for someone to figure out where they go.”
