Joe Louis takes a nap in a hammock

Certain images immediately conjure up feelings of vacation and exotic travels. The golden sand of a beach. The pina colada dressed with a tiny umbrella. Large brim hats. Similarly when I think of hammocks, my mind wanders to a peaceful, carefree place.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the prolific presence of hammocks throughout Cambodia. They popped up at hostels, by the beaches, and even near ancient temples. In case you are need of an emergency afternoon nap, you don’t have far to look. There is something about laying in hammock – with a book, a drink, or a significant other – that elevates the act of doing nothing to a higher form of relaxation. The Cambodians have figured this out. Westerners still have much to learn.

See what other blogs are saying about hammocks in Cambodia:

“These days, life in Cambodia is a lot more peaceful and relaxing. The one aspect that came as a pleasant surprise is how they all enjoy lounging and napping in a hammock!
Typically, I see hammocks at a seaside town, slung between 2 palm trees perhaps. Not so in Cambodia. I saw them everywhere! On the side of the road, behind souvenir stands, in a tuk tuk, on a boat. Maybe it’s because of the heat. Whatever their reason, I agree with their hammock lifestyle!”

“Really, what better way is there to relax than with an ice cold drink
and a hammock
overlooking a gorgeous view?!?!?!

So we stopped.
and time stopped.
I tell you what, I have never been SO relaxed in my life.
It was though time stood still!!”
